Nigeria is a country blessed with an abundance of Agricultural resources and produce.

From North to South, East to west of Nigeria exists diverse agricultural produce peculiar to each of the states and geographical zones.

Nigeria has three key necessary ingredients sine qua non for not just development of Agricultural resources but also marketing of the produced and processed food produce.

These three critical parameters are; Land, Water and Population.

Nigeria is blessed with 84 million hectares of arable land, 50.4 million hectares (60%) of uncultivated land, A whole year of sunshine, 230 billion cubic meters of water and almost a 200 million population.

Hence, not just do we have the water and fertile land for food production (crops and livestock), we also have a huge population and market to consume the food we grow.

Unfortunately, Nigerians annually still spend over $10 billion annually importing food products and items that we can grow and also find a market for them locally.

A huge gap currently exists between the local production figures of most food produce and their demand and annual consumption rates. Consider the following;

  • Our annual demand for fish in Nigeria is currently put at 2.7 million tons per year, while our current local supply is 0.7 million tons.
  • Our annual demand for chicken in Nigeria is currently put at 200 million birds per year, while our current local supply is about 140 million birds.
  • Our annual demand for tomato in Nigeria is currently put at 2.7 million tons per year, while our current local supply is about 0.8 million tons.
  • Our annual demand for milk / diary in Nigeria is currently put at 2.0 million tons per year, while our current local supply is about 0.6 million tons.

The same trend in gaps and deficit between supply and demand exist for other key food produce; wheat, rice, maize, Sorghum, Snail, soybean, oil palm, cocoa etc.

These gaps and the recent import restrictions on key food and Agro produce therefore present huge opportunity for existing and prospective Agrobusiness investors to make money by making informed investments in these key areas where gaps in supply currently exist.

The need to also earn foreign exchange in the current era of FOREX instability especially for Importers has opened the door for most companies to diversity into Agro commodities Investment and Export.

Let us therefore, examine some of the Agrobusiness ventures that existing and prospective investors can leverage their investments, make money and grow the local economy;
