The recent recession in Nigeria and most importantly the difficulty and instability experienced by businesses, particularly importers in assessing Foreign Exchange, has forced many businesses, individuals and companies to look towards and diversifying into agriculture and agribusiness as a veritable means of income generation and investment.

All around Nigeria today, there is a renewed and new found interest by investors to invest in Agriculture and Agrobusiness.

These interests have seen existing and prospective investors taking shots at different Agriculture and Agrobusiness ventures with the most promising returns on investment and with a huge market potential. These include; Agro commodities Trading & Export, Catfish Farming, Poultry Farming, Snail Farming, Crops farming, Greenhouse farming etc.

For most of these new investors, what should matter the most is the availability of capital and funds to invest in these Agrobusiness ventures.

However, from experience and records, While there is a large market and income potentials from each of the above Agrobusiness ventures, a lot of beginners and new entrants have had their fingers burnt and incurred huge losses at first trial largely due to ignorance and lack of appropriate knowledge on what obtains for each sector.

What then should new and prospective Investors wishing to invest in these sectors worry most about? Capital or right Knowledge and Information?

While adequate funding and availability of capital is key for not just Agrobusiness but other investments, it is important for new Agrobusiness investors to know that in Agrobusiness, right information and knowledge most times is about the most important ingredient and factor for profitable investment.

For instance, no matter the amount of capital invested in a catfish farm, having runts instead of shooters would almost certainly result in a near total loss of capital. Also the farmer who lacks exposure to processing opportunities (Fish Smoking), would certainly not make as much as the farmer who explores processing value chain in terms of Fish smoking.

Also, in the case of Poultry farming, no matter the millions pumped in to set up a poultry farm, if the wrong variety of day old supplied is not healthy enough, loses become inevitable. So are other key factors that must be watched out for.

With Agro commodities Investment (Local Trading and Export), the right knowledge on primary sourcing would almost differentiate the profitable and unprofitable Agro commodity trader. So is the issue of quality standards, which Agro commodity to allocate more money than the others, assess to Export market etc.

I am often amazed that most people who go into snail farming in Nigeria doesn’t even know that there are varieties and species of snails reared, talk  more of why they should farm a particular breed over the other.

For those interested in Agric financing and loans, they have little or no understanding about necessary structures that must be in place to qualify for most Agric financing and how best they can readily package themselves.

  1. Fish farming, snailery and crop are not the only agribusiness, mushroom farming was not mentioned at all whereas it is part of farming and only few people are in to it.
