Sesame Seed, also called benniseed is the most sought after vegetable oil in the world as its industrial ingredients can be used for the production of margarine, canned sardine, corned beef, soap making and ink and is well preferred to other vegetable oils because of its lack of odour, chemical composition, colour and taste.
Nigeria currently produces about 300,000 metric tonnes of benni Seed.
Nigeria is the second largest producer of sesame seed in Africa after sudan and ranking seventh in the World.
In Nigeria, sesame seed production is traditionally for export, with less than 10% utilised for sesame products such as nutritional oil, pharmaceuticals, soap and cosmetics, production of animal feeds, etc.
The value of benni seed exports from Nigeria in 2016 amounted to a total amount of about $55m (2016) (NEPC)
